GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Warming centers and shelters will open in Cameron and Hidalgo counties ahead of the cold front. Loaves & Fishes of the RGV in Harlingen, the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library in Edinburg, and the First Baptist Church in Weslaco will offer emergency services beginning Jan. 25.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Animal advocates and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office urged pet owners to provide proper shelter amid near-freezing temperatures hitting the Rio Grande Valley this weekend (as required by the Texas Safe Outdoor Dogs Act) to avoid misdemeanor charges.  KRGV
  • Edinburg Fire Chief Omar Garza warned residents to use space heaters safely as a cold front approaches, advising that heaters be plugged directly into wall outlets (without extension cords) and kept three feet from flammable items.  KRGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • UTRGV men’s basketball will begin a three-game road trip on Saturday facing Houston Christian—hoping a win can extend their streak and set up a chance to avenge an earlier loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as they aim to secure a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.  KRGV
  • RGV Vipers beat Rip City Remix 108-99 on Thursday, Jan. 22 in Edinburg as Tristen Newton led with 34 points and Daishen Nix delivered 23 points and 12 rebounds on a 15–2 run that sealed the victory, and they will meet the Remix again Saturday at 7:00 p.m.  KRGV
