CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Valley Symphony Orchestra will kick off its spring season with Star Wars + Four Hands, set for Feb. 6 at McAllen Performing Arts Center and Feb. 7 at the TSC Performing Arts Center in Brownsville. Executive Director David Lobel said additional concerts are planned for the season. KRGV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Texas officials warned Rio Grande Valley producers that the invasive pasture mealybug was detected today in Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy counties and could harm hay and livestock feed; growers are advised to check fields daily and treat affected hay with soapy water + burning. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The UIL announced a two-year realignment for athletic and academic competitions on Monday at a Region I meeting in Edinburg. Schools across the area have now received new football district assignments for upcoming events. KRGV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Producers were alerted to the pasture mealybug, an invasive pest damaging grasslands in 20 Texas counties including those near Mission. Texas Agriculture officials advised checking fields daily and using soapy water or hay burning to reduce damage. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ TSA is now charging a $45 fee at Valley International and McAllen International Airports for travelers without a Real ID (a driver’s license marked by a star) and requires online payment before the TSA check today. Travelers with passports are exempt. KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Low-cost lab tests and health screenings are offered at the Hidalgo County Public Health Lab (no doctor’s order needed) and are available to everyone regardless of insurance. Residents can walk in or call 956-292-7765 to schedule an appointment. KRGV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The UTRGV Vaqueros defeated Houston Christian 74-57 on Monday in Edinburg, extending their winning streak to six games (the longest in program history). They will travel on Saturday to face New Orleans. KRGV
