CRIME NEWS

  • Mission PD will host a Crime Victims’ Rights Awareness Walk on April 10 at 6:30 p.m.—the one-mile event honors survivors, offers resources to those affected by crime, and gives the first 100 participants a commemorative T-shirt.  FOX RGV
  • Jorge Enrique Saldana-Gonzalez, 44, was arrested over the weekend in La Blanca on a murder charge after fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend Ana Maria Davila outside Sandra’s Bar in Alamo — he said he felt hurt after seeing her with another man.  MyRGV.com
  • A jury convicted Rigoberto Resendez Jr., a 49-year-old Mexican national, last Thursday for aggravated assault in connection with the nearly 25-year beating death of Alfredo Ontiveros at a Pharr nightclub; he will be sentenced on Wednesday afternoon and remains in detention ($150,000 bond) since his May 22 arrest at the Hidalgo International Bridge.  MyRGV.com
  • An Edinburg man, 20, accused of hitting and killing cyclist Amilcar Gomez on July 9th will be arraigned today on charges of intoxication manslaughter and accident involving death, authorities said—officers noted his belligerent behavior and evidence linking his white 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe to the incident.  MyRGV.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Jon Dale once planted native tree seedlings as a teen in Harlingen to help bring back the lost Tamaulipan thornforest, and he now leads American Forests in efforts to restore it. He is working with local officials in San Carlos to launch a community forest that will cut flooding and improve green space—an effort to revive the forest cover in the Rio Grande Valley.  MyRGV.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Texas Health System in Edinburg and McAllen offer free glucose screenings every Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and HEB pharmacy locations also provide free screenings to help detect diabetes, which affects about one in three people in the Rio Grande Valley.  KRGV
