- ➤ The Mission Police Department held its 14th annual Remembrance Walk for crime victims on Thursday in Mission. Cynthia Banda spoke at the event to honor her sister (Melissa Banda, killed nearly five years ago by an ex-husband now serving a life sentence) while police provided resources for those affected by crime. - ➤ Four men were arrested after a high-speed chase ended in Mercedes following a report of a stolen vehicle at Planet Fitness in Alamo—authorities say the suspects face charges of organized crime and drug possession while a fifth suspect remains at large. FOX RGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ South Texas Health Systems is offering free glucose screenings this month to raise awareness of diabetes—Bella Michaels demonstrated the testing process on April 11. KRGV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The UTRGV chess team won its fourth national championship last Sunday at the President’s Cup at UT Dallas—tying with Webster University as underdogs with extensive year-round training. The team will be honored at halftime during the spring game on April 17 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Brownsville. MyRGV.com
- ➤ Henry Miller, sports editor for AIM Media Texas—who spent 37 years covering local sports and promoted Rio Grande Valley athletes—died this week at age 58. He expanded high school sports coverage and is survived by his daughter, Camilla Miller. MyRGV.com
