BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Minga’s Luxury Gentlemen’s Barbershop reopened Tuesday at 1501 Hooks Ave after an arson fire destroyed the original Donna shop in September 2025 (the owner spent $23,000 to relaunch with community support). The shop is now insured and ready for future growth. KRGV
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Disney on Ice: Jump In (a family-friendly show) is coming to Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg this weekend; tickets are on sale now. The production will present beloved Disney characters in a live ice performance. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Starting this fall, UTRGV students join Mission’s mosquito control team to track mosquitoes and help prevent West Nile and Zika in the city’s first internship program, which offers hands-on public health training (according to UTRGV entomologist Dr. Christopher Vitek). KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ This April, H-E-B and South Texas Health System will offer free diabetes screenings—while CHANNEL 5 NEWS and KRGV air programs on diabetes prevention and treatment for RGV residents. KRGV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Mission Veterans golfer Amabely Rodriguez secured an individual spot at the 5A girls golf state tournament in Georgetown after posting 76 and 75 at the regional in McAllen. Her team finished fourth and the tournament will begin May 4 at Legacy Hills Golf Club. KRGV
- ➤ UTRGV men’s and women’s tennis teams qualified for the Southland Conference tournament for a second consecutive season; the women will face Northwestern State at 10 a.m. on Sunday in Beaumont (the men will compete against TAMUCC the following morning). KRGV
- ➤ UTRGV baseball will host Southeastern on ESPNU tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium, marking the first time a local game airs nationally; head coach Derek Matlock said the game will let fans see the hidden diamond in action. KRGV
