- ➤ Craig Ellis, recovering from two strokes, married Christy Garcia-Ellis on April 16 at South Texas Health System McAllen after decades of waiting for a church wedding. The hospital staff (including Father Roy Snipes) decorated the room with wedding décor and a cake to honor the special day. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Palmview High School’s Conjunto La Tradición won the Team Division state championship at La Cultura Vive Duelo State Competition, with Hector Contreras and Gabriel Meza leading a performance that highlights La Joya ISD’s strong Fine Arts program. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal officials broke ground on a $750 million facility at Moore Air Base near Edinburg on Friday to produce sterile screwworm flies that will protect livestock from pests & speed up response times, with operations set to begin by the end of 2027. KRGV
- ➤ Hidalgo County Drainage District No. 1 opened a new $4.2 million flood safety training facility on Friday, April 17, to boost employee safety and flood response coordination across the county (facility available for partner agencies training). KRGV
- ➤ Today, state officials attended a groundbreaking at Moore Air Base in Edinburg for a USDA sterile fly production facility to protect livestock from New World Screwworm + the move follows parasite detection in Nuevo León, 90 miles from the border. KRGV
- ➤ A border wall project has been awarded and is set to move forward near La Lomita Chapel (a 160-year-old church) at Mission’s public park, raising concerns about access among local residents. City officials confirm the park will remain open as construction proceeds. KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ This April, the *Heart of the Valley* campaign offers free glucose tests at participating locations through H-E-B and South Texas Health System to raise diabetes awareness while Channel 5 News and KRGV will educate viewers on prevention and treatment. KRGV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Sharyland goalkeeper Tatiana Castillo signed with Huston-Tillotson University (Austin) on Friday; she was named Co-Goalkeeper of the Year last season and said playing college soccer honors her family's legacy. KRGV
- ➤ La Villa senior guard Herlinda Rivera signed her national letter of intent to play basketball at Missouri Valley Friday morning. The standout, who averaged 16 points per game last season (and 18 during district games), now embarks on her college career. KRGV
- ➤ Sharyland defensive end Danny Mireles signed his letter of intent to join Texas Lutheran’s football program on Friday. The team captain (a first-team All-District selection) is eager to build a winning culture with his new team. KRGV
