- ➤ Monica Melissa Patterson, who is serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of a 96-year-old man and theft, filed a federal petition for a writ of habeas corpus in McAllen. Her appeal alleges that her counsel failed to present expert testimony and properly investigate critical evidence — including witness cross-examination — which she says could have changed the trial outcome.
