The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office warns residents that a text message scam is circulating which asks for personal and financial information for false toll fees — officials confirmed that genuine toll notices are mailed and advise ignoring any such texts.

On May 8, Bishop Daniel Flores of the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville held a news conference in San Juan to mark the election of Leo XIV as the first American pope—he said the moment was both surprising and a sign of hope for a united Church focused on outreach to the poor.

Flores recalled discussions with the new pope about local needs along the Rio Grande and his commitment to a missionary spirit.
