A crowd gathered Monday morning at Mission Police Department during National Police Week to honor fallen officers from across the Rio Grande Valley.

The event especially remembered Cpl. Jose Luis 'Speedy' Espericueta, killed in 2019 during a domestic disturbance, and his wife set up a scholarship fund in his honor — showing the community's lasting support.

The National Weather Service in Brownsville warned that the Rio Grande Valley will face triple digit temperatures this week – with McAllen expected to see 102 to 103 degrees and nearby areas like Hebronville reaching 108 degrees.

Residents such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses should take breaks in the shade and drink water to avoid heat stress.

KRGV-TV kicked off its new campaign Monday to raise funds for toys and essential items for children at South Texas Health System Children's Hospital (STHS).

Spokesman Tom Castañeda and KRGV Chief Meteorologist Tim Smith (who explained the campaign’s potential impact) said donations will help purchase the needed supplies.
