GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City council approved a $4 million relocation plan Monday to move the Mission Sanitation Department from its site on Abelino Farias Road and Conway Avenue. City leaders said plans for a new 10-acre facility will finish in about eight months—construction will begin afterward.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • South Texas Health Systems is educating Mission residents about early stroke signs during National Stroke Awareness Month. The organization will host the Steps for Stroke event—a community challenge where participants will walk, run or dance to reach at least 10,000 steps per day and 50,000 total—to help locals learn to act quickly if symptoms occur.  KRGV
  • 10-year-old Ailany at South Texas Health System Children’s hospital in Edinburg recovered from an appendix removal and found comfort playing Connect 4 and Jenga in the hospital toy room—funded by the KRGV Cares Closet. Donations are being collected until May 16 to bring more toys to children in need.  KRGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • At Nikki Rowe High, the Warriors start a new football era with coach Jamaar Taylor (who is bringing in a new game plan) as they join spring football practice. The coaching staff (who value these sessions) is checking players and getting them ready for the season.  KRGV
  • St. Joseph Academy's Carmina Tijerina signed with UTRGV volleyball after earning TAPPS All-State honorable mention and logging over 1,000 career digs while helping her team secure its first bi-district title. She follows in her sister Regina's footsteps—Tijerina said she liked the campus, coach, and teammates on her visit.  KRGV
  • UTRGV Vaqueros beat Texas State Bobcats 11—9 on Tuesday night after Easton Moomau hit a grand slam in the first inning and Anthony Tejada pitched three strong innings—UTRGV ended the regular season 34—16 and will host Texas A&M—Corpus Christi at 6:00 p.m. Thursday in Edinburg.  KRGV
  • The Pioneer Diamondbacks beat the Corpus Christi Rays in a tight three-game series last week by losing game one and winning the next two to secure their regional semifinal spot. They will face 26-9 Liberty Hill in the semifinal starting Friday at 7 p.m. at Somerset High School.  KRGV
  • PSJA baseball remains undefeated at 4-0 as they enter the regional semifinal against Austin Westlake in a home-and-home series. Game 2 + game 3, if needed, will be played on Saturday in the Valley as the team seeks to extend its winning streak.  KRGV
  • After losing the first postseason game, the Sharyland Rattlers won four straight games and outscored Mission Veterans 7—1 over two games to advance in high school baseball. The team will face the Bourne—Champion Chargers at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi with Game 1 set for Thursday night, Game 2 on Friday, and a possible Game 3 on Saturday.  KRGV
