- ➤ Today, Buckner Rio Grande Valley collects new shoes and socks through its annual Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls Drive to help vulnerable children with donation bins placed at local churches, businesses, and community centers until May 30. The drive needs boys’ sizes 1—5 and girls’ sizes 4—5 and only accepts brand new, closed-toe shoes. KRGV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Monday near Bentsen State Park, U.S. Border Patrol agents from McAllen and the U.S. Coast Guard—using specialized water rescue techniques—rescued two individuals attempting to cross the Rio Grande illegally while apprehending three others. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Texas Robotics Alliance will hold STEM and robotics camps throughout the summer in the Valley. Executive Director Jose Luis Sanchez said children will learn skills that can help in future careers. KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The KRGV Cares Closet campaign has helped make children’s stays at South Texas Health System children’s hospital in Edinburg more comfortable—STHS Behavioral Director of Utilization Review Bob Cooper said the effort has a positive impact. KRGV
- ➤ South Texas is facing a record heat wave with triple digit temperatures and local health experts advise residents to drink water, avoid direct sun from noon to 6 p.m., and wear light clothing to prevent heat illness — outdoor workers and vulnerable groups are urged to take extra precautions. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Sharyland Rattlers held a send off Wednesday morning as eight athletes headed to the state tournament in San Antonio—competing in boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles events. The tournament starts today with Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches and marks the first time in program history that separate duos have qualified for state play—showing a historic team achievement.
