CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Julian Alberto Soto led law enforcement on a vehicle pursuit in Roma in January when he drove off an embankment to evade arrest and pleaded guilty to human smuggling charges, receiving a sentence of over three years in federal prison + three years of supervised release and a $100 fine as part of an operation that spanned from 2008 to 2025. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dr. J.A. Gonzalez has been named as the lone finalist for superintendent of Hidalgo ISD, and he brings 28 years of public education experience. There is a 21-day waiting period before he takes on the role—his previous work includes serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ FEMA has set up four disaster recovery centers in Harlingen+Weslaco+Sebastian+Rio Grande City to help residents affected by March storms that damaged over 5,000 homes. The centers will stay open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and applicants must bring photos, repair receipts, and proper ID plus a social security card. KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Texas Health and Human Services will offer free medical, dental and vision services — part of Operation Border Health — to Rio Grande Valley residents from July 21 to July 25. Residents can access these free services this summer. KRGV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ UTRGV track and field has sent a record eight Vaquero athletes to the NCAA West First Round, running from today to May 31—if any finish in the top 12, they will move on to the NCAA championship meet in Oregon starting June 11. KRGV
