CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Carlos Martinez, the son-in-law of a former Gulf Cartel boss, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for extorting transmigrante forwarding agencies in Los Indios — he also must pay a $2 million fine and serve three years of supervised release. MyRGV.com
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crews are assessing storm damage in Hidalgo County after a severe thunderstorm moved through the area on June 12, causing over 37,000 power outages and damage in Pharr and Weslaco. AEP expects power to be restored by today at 11:16 p.m.—teams are working to clear debris and respond to flooding reports. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ South Texas mayors from McAllen, Mission, Harlingen, Brownsville, Laredo, San Antonio, Edinburg and Weslaco issued a statement Thursday that local law enforcement was not involved in ongoing immigration raids + they urged federal authorities to improve communication to reduce business disruptions. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ UTRGV extended head baseball coach Derek Matlock’s contract until 2030 after the Vaqueros finished a record 2025 season with a 36-18 mark and a share of the Southland Conference title—Matlock has led the team since 2017 and set new program records. KRGV
- ➤ UTRGV football ended another week of youth camps for second through fifth graders, teaching them the basics of throwing, catching and tackling on a D1 field. Coach Travis Bush said the drills plus contest events are set to spark a passion for football among local youth. KRGV
- ➤ The RGV Vipers are hosting a Nike Basketball Camp from June 23rd to June 26th at their practice facility (inside the DHR Sports Wellness Center in Edinburg) with John Knight III leading the camp. Kids (ages 7-16) can join the camp. KRGV
