COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rio Grande Valley residents can volunteer as Shelter Heroes to help flood victims in Kerr County by assisting with shelter operations, meal distribution, and emotional support. Volunteers must complete online training & are offered travel assistance along with a $35 daily meal rate by the American Red Cross & Just Serve South Texas.  KRGV

CRIME NEWS

  • Cristobal Stephan Garzez, 28, was arraigned yesterday in Harlingen on charges of intoxication manslaughter, failure to stop and render aid, and controlled substance possession after a crash on Expressway 83 that killed David Zapata, aged 46—his bond is set at $725,000 and he must remain in the Rio Grande Valley under court conditions.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • IDEA Public Schools will host three back-to-school backpack giveaways at Rio Grande Valley campuses. The first event is on Saturday, July 12 at IDEA San Juan from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.—the first 500 students with a guardian will receive backpacks filled with supplies, with further giveaways on July 19 at IDEA La Joya and July 26 at IDEA Sports Park where local businesses will offer services.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Vicente Gonzalez said that the Big Beautiful bill is now law – it provides the largest tax cut for middle and working-class Americans and funds border security. He added that recent ICE raids in the Rio Grande Valley led to dozens of arrests and affected local businesses.  KRGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The RGV Red Crowns had two recent home games canceled when Dallas teams could not travel, leaving fans disappointed. President Jamal Fayyad said the team is planning a friendly match and two extra home games for season ticket holders — while refunds for single game tickets are issued.  KRGV
