EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, Hidalgo County Precinct 3 and Driscoll Health held a back-to-school fair at Veterans Memorial Pavilion in Mission—free school supplies were given to the first 1,000 attendees and health services including immunizations, screenings, healthcare assistance and haircuts were provided to students. - ➤ House Bill 1481 bans cell phones, smartwatches and AirPods in Texas public schools, and local districts in Mission will enforce the measure starting September 1. Some parents worry that the rule may limit communication during after-school activities — while educators expect it to reduce classroom distractions — as the change takes effect next school year. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller will hold a press conference in Mission to announce drought relief funding from the 1944 Water Treaty Agricultural Assistance Program—this $280 million grant from the state and USDA will give checks to Rio Grande Valley farmers next week as they cope with low water levels. - ➤ U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz introduced the Bracero Program 2.0 Act to reform the H-2A visa process by allowing more agricultural jobs, setting wages at the state minimum plus $2 per hour, and extending contracts to 12 months. History professor Mayra Lizette Avila hopes the new bill will improve worker protections—ensuring farmworkers are treated better than in past programs. MyRGV.com
