CRIME NEWS
- ➤ McAllen man Hugo Ernesto Lara will face trial on Oct. 13 for allegedly driving wrong-way on the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway and killing 20-year-old Mariah Desiree Enriquez on June 2, 2024 — he faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle that can bring up to 20 years in prison. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Payne Arena will host a throwback hip hop concert on Saturday, July 26, where legendary artists will perform classic hits for music fans. The event offers a chance to win a pair of tickets by calling the provided number — a special opportunity for locals to enjoy hip hop history. FOX RGV
- ➤ Radio Bilingue in Starr County remains the only public radio station in the Rio Grande Valley after the Diocese of Brownsville sold its NPR and PBS stations in 2019 — Grassroots Public Radio RGV has struggled to restore full NPR and PBS programming due to funding and support issues. KRGV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Texas lawmakers in a special legislative session are reviewing Senate Bill 1278—crafted to let human trafficking victims use an affirmative defense—for potential changes after Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed it. Hidalgo County District Attorney Terry Palacios said prosecutors will continue charging crimes committed after victims are rescued as lawmakers work to clarify the law. KRGV
- ➤ Mission residents are invited by the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office to join a free 12-week Citizen's Academy starting August 28 to learn neighborhood protection—only 25 slots are available and applications are due by August 21. KRGV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ New legislation will cut Medicaid funding and require recipients to show 80 hours of work, education or community service each month while switching reviews from annual to semi-annual (a change that local health groups warn may reduce coverage for vulnerable residents). The law will increase the need for help in navigating the new rules. FOX RGV
- ➤ IDEA Public Schools is partnering with ProCare Health Service to offer low-cost vaccine clinics for IDEA children and some non-IDEA students across the Rio Grande Valley, with the Mission clinic open today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 1600 Schuerbach Ln.; most private insurance (including Medicaid) will be accepted and those without coverage will pay $7 per vaccine. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ UTRGV Athletics released the complete 2025 schedule for the Vaqueros volleyball team. The team will play 10 home matches at the Fieldhouse and open the season in Phoenix at the GCU Invitational from Aug. 29 to 31—facing Gonzaga, GCU and Long Island while season tickets are on sale for $55. KRGV
