COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wilma and Pebbles, two tortoiseshell kittens, are available for adoption at Weslaco Animal Care Services with waived fees. The shelter will hold two adoption events on Saturday—giving local families a chance to welcome a new pet.  KRGV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Mission business reported that a donation bin—located next to the Nitro Fruit stand on Conway Avenue and Highway 107—has been covered in discarded mattresses and dumped items for months, lowering sales and creating a safety hazard for drivers.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Valley election administrators are waiting for guidance on six new Texas election bills. Officials from Cameron and Hidalgo counties will attend a seminar in Austin from August 12th–14th to learn how to implement changes to worker privacy, voting schedules, and equipment security.  MyRGV.com
  • A McAllen attorney said the DHS plan urging DACA recipients (Dreamers) to self-deport has raised worries about the safety of over 500,000 immigrants brought as children. The attorney said Dreamers should talk to a lawyer since the directive offered $1,000 and a free flight for those who leave.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Healthcare workers in the Rio Grande Valley reported that many patients are skipping appointments because they fear detention by immigration authorities — South Texas Health System outpatient services Director Leticia Sosa said telehealth options are available while immigration advocates advise patients to adopt a safety plan.  KRGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • UTRGV football held its first training camp practice on Thursday morning before a total of 25 practices lead up to the first gameday on August 30. Head coach Travis Bush said closed scrimmages on August 9 and August 16 will help decide Week 1 starters — the starting depth chart remains fluid.  KRGV
