CRIME NEWS

  • A man rescued a 2-year-old boy found walking alone near Mission on Saturday night — he saw the child in danger, used his emergency lights to alert drivers, called 911, and the boy was later reunited with his mother as Child Protective Services began investigating the incident.  KRGV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mission CISD installed a new silent panic alarm system on all 22 campuses as part of its school safety plan, allowing staff to alert key personnel and law enforcement with one push of a button — the district also upgraded fencing, windows, and conducted active shooter drills.  KRGV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas Department of Public Safety is reminding drivers to be extra careful as schools reopen in the Rio Grande Valley plus to stop when a school bus has its stop arm extended or red lights flashing. In 2024, nearly 800 school zone crashes and almost 2,500 bus crashes occurred, and drivers breaking the rules could face fines up to 1,200 dollars or lose their license for six months.  KRGV
  • Today, Mission Police Department started a mental health crisis team with four special officers and a mental health evaluator to help people in need. The department is offering an internship in mental health data work for a university student with applications due by August 25 – giving students real experience in crisis support work.  FOX RGV
  • Colin Allred visited Alamo in the Rio Grande Valley to discuss immigration and the fair treatment of ICE officers ahead of the March primaries+ he builds his campaign after his recent Senate race loss as he seeks support for the upcoming November elections.  FOX RGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Pioneer Diamondbacks are gearing up to chase a district title this fall with a strong offense led by returning playmakers such as William Goodloe and Dylan Tijerina (each rushed for over 800 yards last season) while a young defense, with just one returning starter (Damian Hernandez), will need to improve. They will open against PSJA in Week 1, begin district play in Week 7, and face their rivalry in the Snakeskin Classic in Week 10.  KRGV
