- ➤ Small business owners in downtown Mission may apply for a $25,000 grant from the Mission Economic Development Corporation—funds can be used for capital improvements, technology, or employee training—and applications are due by Sept. 2. KRGV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A new pilot program will let students and parents from Rio Bravo use a special lane at the Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge to cut wait times at the checkpoint (available for one hour at 6 a.m. and 2 p.m.), easing daily school commutes. Councilwoman Lupita Salas started the program to help families get to school faster. KRGV
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The La Villa Cardinals, led by new head coach Joseph Garcia, aim to win a fifth consecutive district title using a strong running game and an iron man mentality. They will face Santa Maria twice and the Mercedes JV team in district play—changes coming after Bruni’s schedule decision. KRGV
- ➤ Mission Veterans football is preparing for the season with sophomore quarterback Roman Reyna taking a leadership role and a strengthened defense aiming to improve on last fall’s 1-3 district record—players will face Mission High in their rivalry matchup before beginning district play against Sharyland in Week 7. KRGV
- ➤ Former RGV Vipers center N'Faly Dante signed a two-year, $4.5 million deal with the Atlanta Hawks—he played 31 games last season under a two-way deal and averaged over 16 points and 10 rebounds. KRGV
