Good morning, Mission. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 26th of September.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Scientists from Texas A&M University developed a barrier method using black plastic mesh — which stops weevil larvae from damaging roots and reduces water loss — that helped trees grow faster and fight citrus greening. Local citrus growers noted nearly 5,000 acres now use the method to improve tree health and increase production.  MyRGV.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas voters will consider Proposition 4 in the November 4th election, a proposed amendment that would allocate $1 billion each year from state sales and use tax revenue to the Texas Water Fund. Supporters such as McAllen Public Utilities General Manager Mark Vega say the measure will help fund projects like the $200 million groundwater desalination plant needed to boost water supplies in the Rio Grande Valley—efforts aimed at addressing low reservoir levels and water challenges with Mexico.  KRGV
  • Ranchers in the Rio Grande Valley remain on alert after a new case of the New World screwworm parasite was confirmed in Sabinas Hidalgo in Nuevo Leon—about 70 miles from the border. Congressman Cuellar urged the USDA to work with Mexican officials to speed up prevention measures since the pest can cause fatal infections in cattle and people.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rio Grande Valley will launch its first pediatric residency program in July 2026 to train doctors and ease a local shortage— the program was approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Hospital leaders say the new program is expected to keep trained doctors in the area so children can receive care closer to home.  KRGV
  • Three-year-old Jireh was diagnosed in 2024 with a rare heart tumor and underwent open-heart surgery and four rounds of chemotherapy that finished in June, his mother Renee Santos said. He received care at the Vannie Cook Clinic in McAllen—South Texas’ only pediatric hematology and oncology center—where advanced treatments from Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine helped local families avoid long trips for treatment.  KRGV
