Good morning, Mission. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 3rd of October.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On the November 2026 ballot, Proposition 17 will allow property owners in border counties to receive a tax break for security projects such as fencing or barriers—Hidalgo County Assistant Chief Appraiser Jorge Gonzalez said the measure may lower property appraisals and that local appraisal districts will wait for state guidance before making changes. Early voting begins Oct. 20 and Election Day is Nov. 4.  KRGV
  • The National WIC Association said that current funding keeps the federally funded WIC program running during the ongoing government shutdown, with applications and benefits still being processed. Local recipients such as San Benito mother Sofia Mares Sepeda-Abrego worry that if the shutdown lasts longer, rising costs — like $60 per can of formula needed for her 2-month-old — could put nearly 76,000 people in Cameron and Hidalgo counties at risk.  KRGV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sam's Memorial Stadium in Brownsville reopened for its first game on Thursday night as the Brownsville Hanna Golden Eagles faced the Mission Veterans Patriots after over $3 million in renovations. The stadium now features new turf plus the old track was removed to create a FIFA style field for soccer, and it will host games every Tuesday and Thursday from November to April while track meets take place at Brownsville Veterans High School.  KRGV
  • UTRGV volleyball swept Northwestern State on Thursday night in Edinburg, improving the team to 2—1 in conference play. They will face East Texas A&M at noon on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse while coach Todd Lowery said the team will review film and plan practice tomorrow morning.  KRGV
