Good morning, Mission. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 7th of November.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal funding for the Hidalgo County Community Service Agency may not be received if the government shutdown continues—thousands of low income families relying on its utilities, emergency services, and tuition assistance programs could see disruptions. The agency, which gets $11 million a year and has $150,000 left in federal funds, will use money from its operational budget if the shutdown lasts into January.  KRGV
  • Brownsville mom Elyse Herrera has struggled to feed her children as the government shutdown paused SNAP benefits, forcing every meal to be measured carefully. Cities across the Rio Grande Valley—including Mission—are offering hot meals and food bag distributions to help affected families amid the crisis.  KRGV

HEALTH NEWS

  • DHR Health and the University of Houston announced they will build a new research and education center for medicine at the corner of Owassa and Jackson roads, with $15 million in state funding. The center will serve as a hub for research, clinical training, and health education in a very underserved region, though plans are still in early stages and construction has not begun.  KRGV
