- ➤ The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office warns residents that a text message scam is circulating which asks for personal and financial information for false toll fees — officials confirmed that genuine toll notices are mailed and advise ignoring any such texts. FOX RGV
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On May 8, Bishop Daniel Flores of the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville held a news conference in San Juan to mark the election of Leo XIV as the first American pope—he said the moment was both surprising and a sign of hope for a united Church focused on outreach to the poor. Flores recalled discussions with the new pope about local needs along the Rio Grande and his commitment to a missionary spirit. MyRGV.com
- ➤ The National Trust for Historic Preservation announced that the San Juan Hotel was named one of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Local groups including the Save the San Juan Hotel Initiative, Latinos in Heritage Conservation, and the Hidalgo County Historical Commission applied for the designation—hoping to work with the city on rehabilitating the site for new community use.
